PREHISTORIC RESEARCH BY JOSÉ MIGUEL DE BARANDARIÁN (Pages 9-49)
IGNACIO BARANDIARÁN

This article outlines a historiographic assessment of both fieldwork and publications by Ethnologist and Prehistorian J.M. de Barandiarán (1889-1991). His archaeological surveys and excavations spanned half of a century and produced a wealth of knowledge for the understanding of Basque Prehistory, mainly on Paleolithic and Megalithic cultures. His professional relations are recalled, as well as the modernity of his data recording methods, thus underlining his protagonism in the emergence of a consistent school of prehistorians.

SECUENCIA ALUVIAL Y POST-ALUVIAL DE LA TERRAZA DE MUHARRA (CARMONA, SEVILLA). APORTACIÓN AL ACHELENSE EN EL VALLE DEL GUADALQUIVIR (Páginas 51-71)
RAFAEL BAENA ESCUDERO Y JOSE ANTONIO CARO GÓMEZ

ALLUVIAL AND POST-ALLUVIAL SEQUENCE AT THE MUHARRA (CARMONA, SEVILLA) TERRACE. CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESEARCH OF THE ACHEULIAN IN THE GUALDALQUIVIR BASIN (Pages 51-71)
RAFAEL BAENA ESCUDERO & JOSÉ ANTONIO CARO GÓMEZ

This paper discusses the stratigraphic alluvial and post-alluvial sequence of the Muharra terrace included of the Upper Terrace Complex of the Lower Guadalquivir valley. Its origin is linked to two different episodes: one related to the sedimentation of the River; the second, post-alluvial one, is related with the development of hydromorphic processes and a palaeosoil. The study of the abundant lithic industry collected within that sequence (more than 450 items), suggests a transitional Acheulian date, placed in a confined environment (Level 4). The sequence shows signs that might correspond to Acheulian in general terms, in the lower levels (included the alluvial ones).

THE GUADAJIRA NECROPOLIS (BADAJOZ) AND THE TRANSITION TO THE BRONZE AGE IN THE MIDDLE GUADIANA BASIN (Pages 95-144)
VICTOR Hurtado Pérez & LEONARDO GARCÍA SANJUÁN

The results of a rescue excavation carried out in 1990 in the Bronze Age necropolis of Guadajira (Badajoz) are presented. Once the empirical basis has been analysed from a pluri-disciplinar perspective (archaeological, anthropological, archaeometallurgical and palaeoenvironmental), Guadajira is assessed within the broader context of the transition to the Bronze Age both in the Middle Guadiana Basin and the Iberian Southwest.

ON THE FOUNDATION OF ASIDO (Pages 179-207)
JOSE LUIS Escacena Carrasco, SALVADOR MONTAÑÉS, INMACULADA
LADRÓN DE GUEVARA & LORENZO PERDIGONES

Archaeological materials of teh Early (Tartessian) Iron Age have been recently found in the surroundings of ancient Asido (modern Medina Sidonia, Cádiz). This fact confirms her foundation during the Phoenician colonization. The foundation of Medina Sidonia coincides with the demographic growth of the Tartessian world that took place through the VIIIth and VIIth centuries BC.

RURAL SETTLEMENTS AND ORIENTALISING POTTERY IN THE CADIZ LOWLANDS (Pages 209-256)
DIEGO RUIZ MATA & ROSALÍA GONZÁLEZ RODRÍGUEZ

The conclusions of recent archaeological interventions in Vaina (El Puerto de Santa María) and El Trobal (Jerez de la Frontera), two protohistoric indigenous settlements in northwest Cádiz, are analysed and used to cast some light, in a broad sense, upon two important issues concerning the orientalizing period in Western Andalusia: the development of urbanism and the introduction of wheel-thrown pottery.

NUEVOS ELEMENTOS ORIENTALIZANTES EN LA COMARCA DE GILENA (Páginas 291-299)

NEW ORIENTALISING ELEMENTS IN THE GILENA SECTOR (SEVILLA) (Pages 291-299)
JULIAN MANCEBO DÁVALOS

A collection of artefacts belonging to Chalcolithic settlements of the Gilena (Sevilla) area, such as El Negrón, are described. Recent prospections have yielded information about the Protohistoric cultures, with sites such as Cerro Gordo and Los Villares. The former has supplied orientalizing and Iberian painted pottery which has already been published, whilst many objects from the latter are also known. The new items analysed in this paper are grey pottery and arrowheads. This evidence enlarges our knowledge about the orientalizing period in the Southeast area of the Sevilla province.
