EL ESTADO DE LA ARQUEOLOGÍA CLÁSICA EN ESPAÑA: PROPUESTAS PARA UN DEBATE NECESARIO (Páginas 9-19)
MERCEDES ORIA SEGURA

CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY IN SPAIN: PROPOSAL FOR A NECESSARY DEBATE (Pages 9-19)
MERCEDES ORIA SEGURA

This paper discusses current trends within Spanish classical archaeology. Pervivence of traditional scholarship, a weak acceptance of recent theoretical approaches, from New Archaeology to Materialism and Post-processualism, and the trend to renew traditional studies with new themes and perspectives, are aspects of this discussion. As a conclusion, the need to adopt a purely archaeological methodology in the study of the Classical World, understanding Archaeology as a specific method of doing History in its broadest sense, is defended.

MATHEMATICAL METHODS OF EVALUATION OF RISK FACTORS FOR THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE: A GIS APLICATION OF T. L. SAATY´S METHOD OF ANALYTICAL HIERARCHY PROCESS (Pages 21-37)
HELIODORO MÁRQUEZ ROSALES

This short paper uses the Analytical Hierarchy Process and modern GIS to evaluate the risk of destruction of the Andalusian archaeological heritage. First, the principal eigenvector of the pairwise comparison matrix assigns weights to a group of factors in a multi-criteria evaluation. Second, these weights are introduced into different images. Finally, a linear function produces a new image from these data in order to evaluate the risk of destruction.

A COMMENT ON IBERIAN PALEOLITHIC: CONTINUITY, STAGES AND PERDURATIONS OF THE TECHNOCULTURAL PROCESS (Pages 39-46)
ENRIQUE Vallespí Pérez

At a general Iberian scale, the Lower Paleolithic appears, from a technocultural point of view, as a continuous process that begins with the initial evidences and Early Iberian Acheulian. lt develops towards the full Acheulian and goes on with a dual Middle Paleolithic represented by Mousterian complexes and post- Acheulian perdurations. These, in turn, are present during the Early Upper Paleolithic in the form of borrowings and terminal regional perdurations.

THE BEGINNINGS OF SOCIAL COMPLEXITY AND THE BELL-BEAKER IN EXTREMADURA (Pages 47-83)
VÍCTOR Hurtado Pérez

The archaeological information about the last phases of the Chalcolitic in Extremadura, and the process towards social complexity that started before the spread of Bell Beaker, are discussed. In the region of Tierra de Barros it is possible to observe the articulation of a hierarchical territory of communal base and defended by fortified settlements. The large settlement of La Pijotilla may have acted as the distributor center for a territory where religion acted as main element of cultural cohesion. The arrival of the Bell Beaker does not seem to involve substantial changes other than stressing previously existing inter-clanic differences.

BURNISHED DECORATIONS IN GREY ORIENTALISING POTTERY (Pages 85-100)
JUAN IGNACIO VALLEJO SÁNCHEZ

Grey Orientalizing Ware, typical productions of the VIIth and VIth centuries BC in Suthern Iberian, constitute a clear example of two different cultural traditions, the Phoenician and the local, indigenous Late Bronze Age. It is possible to trace connections between the two through the formal and stylistic study of these vessels. Burnished Decorations analysis applied to these vases, scarce but meaningful, confirms these relations and direct our investigations about the historical meaning Grey Orientalizing Ware had.

LA OLVIDADA “NECRÓPOLIS FENICIA” DE MARCHENA (SEVILLA) (Páginas 101-114)
EDUARDO FERRER ALBELDA

THE FORGOTTEN “PHOENICIAN NECROPOLIS” OF MARCHENA (SEVILLA) (Pages 101-114)
EDUADO FERRER ALBELDA

In this article we seek to relate some ancient information with a hypothetical Carthaginian necropolis next to a Carthaginian camp situated in Montemolín during Second Punic War. iMore especifically, a pit tomb and a chamber shown as Phoenician hypogeum, as well as two sculptures appearing at the end of the 19th century at the outskirts of Marchena, are discussed.

LA CERÁMICA TIPO KUASS. AVANCE A LA SISTEMATIZACIÓN DEL TALLER GADITANO (Páginas 115-134)

THE KUASS TYPE POTTERY. ADVANCE TO THE SISTEMATISATION OF THE CÁDIZ WORKSHOP (Pages 115-134)
ANA MARÍA NIVEAU E VILLEDARY Y MARIÑAS

At the end of the seventies, the French researcher Michel Ponsich published the preliminary results of his excavations in the north-African settlement of Kuass (Arcila, Morocco). He put emphasis on a set of glasses which are reminiscent of black slip productions. Nevertheless, the peculiarities of those glasses led him to suggest that he was dealing with locally made imitations. From that moment on, this type of ceramics is known under the name of Kuass ceramics, although later investigations have determined Cádiz as the place of origin of this ceramics, thus defining a new Mediterranean workshop.

EL BETILO ESTILIFORME DE TORREPAREDONES (Páginas 135-158)
IRENE SECO SERRA

THE TORREPAREDONES BAETYL (Pages 135-158)
IRENE SECO SERRA

This paper deals with the baetyl (i. e. aniconic stone cult image of a deity) of Torreparedones (Córdoba). Knowledge of this Andalusian site has been substantially improved after the publication of the excavation report by B. Cunliffe and M. C. Femández Castro in 1999. The sanctuary and the baetyl itself are analysed. Special attention is paid to baetylic morphology and its implications as well as to ritual, which probably included oracular activity. The important Punic influence is best exemplified by the goddess Dea Caelestis, the Roman counter part of Punic Tanit.

THE NOTIONS OF “IBERIA” E “IBERIAN” IN STRABO (Pages 159-187)
JOSÉ MARÍA GÓMEZ FRAILE

This paper studies the different senses applied by Strabo to the voice ” Iberia ” and their variants. After classifying the different contexts where these voices appear along the 17 books of Strabo´s Geography it has been possible to document the following senses: 1. group of the Iberian Peninsula, 2. Hispania Citerior, 3. area that exceeds the limits of the Iberian Peninsula, and 4. a specific part of the Iberian Peninsula that can be identified with the territory located among the mountain ranges Idubeda and Orospeda and the oriental and northern coasts of the Iberian Peninsula.

NEW INTERVENTIONS IN THE ROMAN THEATRE OF ITALICA: SOME COMMENTS ON ITS CONSTRUCTIVE EVOLUTION AND SYSTEM OF ACCESS (Pages 189-205)
OLIVA RODRÍGUEZ GUTIÉRREZ & MANUEL VERA REINA

In this article we present the results obtained from the last archaeological excavations carried out on the Roman theatre of Itálica in 1999. The intervention has been made at the itinera, the lateral entrances to the orchestra, despite of their necessary drainage. Relevant information about the building development is gained through recent research on the theatre and the analysis of its architectural parts. Information of particular interest comes from the south edge of the aditus maximus, where the building of a huge opus caementicium structure, out of the theatre, forced to make important reforms in some areas of the building.

LA IGLESIA VISIGODA DE MORÓN DE LA FRONTERA (SEVILLA) (Páginas 217-239)
MANUEL VERA REINA

THE VISIGOTHIC CHURCH OF MORÓN DE LA FRONTERA (SEVILLA) (Pages 217-239)
MANUEL VERA REINA

The discovery of a visigothic church in Morón de la Frontera (Seville) has been of great interest for the knowledge of the Christianization process in the southern district of the county of Seville. Along the following pages we will tackle the study and interpretation of the architectural remains of the basilica and the main materials recovered during the excavation.

In this article an attempt is made to reconstruct the evolution of a Sevillian suburb, called La Cestería, located near the Triana Gate, since its foundation in the XIVth-XVth centuries AD. In order to achieve this goal, data provided by various recent rescue excavations carried out within Seville are discussed.

“LOZA QUEBRADA” PROCEDENTE DE LA CAPILLA DEL COLEGIO-UNIVERSIDAD DE SANTA MARÍA DE JESÚS (SEVILLA) (Páginas 263-292)
ALFONSO PLEGUEZUELO, ANTONIO LIBRERO, MARÍA ESPINOSA Y PEDRO MORA

POTTERY FROM THE CHAPEL OF THE COLEGIO-UNIVERSIDAD DE SANTA MARÍA DE JESÚS (SEVILLA) (Pages 263-292)
ALFONSO PLEGUEZUELO, ANTONIO LIBRERO, MARÍA ESPINOSA & PEDRO MORA

In this paper, a group of more than 300 ceramic artefacts of faulty manufacture, currently kept in the Real Alcázar of Seville, is studied. The coarse wares come from the filling of the vault of the presbitery of the chapel of Santa María de Jesús College, also at Sevilla. On the basis of documentary information already published, the date of manufacture and setting for these ceramics can be established between 1503 and 1506. This group of vessels may be clustered in 50 different morphological types, 30 of which are now published for the first time. This paper is intended as a complement of other works already published in this journal, thus making more valuable the spreading of this data. The typological variety, the possibility to know the chronology of their manufacture (for such a crucial period in the history of Seville) and the geographic range of their diffusion, plus their good condition of preservation and its probable local origin, make this group a collection of special archaeological interest. Even although their excavation in the 1970’s did not follow the standards that are currently applied.
